at first the car made that typical bad stater noise.Now I get nothing when I turn the key, no noise ,nothing.Sometimes it will start,other times not. So my question is do you think its the starter and if it is where is it in the engine,I would like to change it myself if I can

sounds like a bad starter
check list before u replace the starter

charge battery ,check terminals and fuses

locate starter under the intake manifold side
check wires and connectors
