Bought 2 weeks ago. Had been sitting for 3 years. Shifts were agressive on test drive. When shifting from drive to neutral, it would stay in drive for a bit. Few days later the transmision stopped responding altogether. It runs fine, starts fine. Will start in any gear. Engine and transmission seemed divorced, no visitation rights.

I'm assuming you have checked the fluid level and it is up. We have had a lot of postings lately on Camry transmissions. Must be something in the weather. I would start by pulling the trans pan and filter. You can tell a lot about what's going on inside by what is in the pan. If the fluid is the color of coffee, it indicates burned clutches or bands. If there are black specs, that's seal material. Silver or brass shavings are major signs of wear and are usually terminal. Take a peek and let me know, Jim.
