What would cause a motor mounts to become damaged?
Can you observe a damaged motor mount by just examine the engine without removing certain key components such as timing belt, and can one motor mount be damaged without the rest of them being damaged.

Motor mounts wear out over time. Simple wear and tear of the vehicle is what causes them to fail. Yes, you can tell when a motor mount has failed without removing anything. The engine will move because of the torque if the mount is no longer capable of holding it sturdy. Sometimes one may fail before the others. However, if one has failed I suggest having them all replaced at once.
