My 4Runner's been in the driveway for about a month and I haven't started it. It was dead when I went to start it and couldn't even jump start. So I went and got a new battery. It still didn't start. When I hook up the battery the interior lights and instrument panel come on as well as the door ajar "ding". But it won't even crank or "turn over". Could it be the alternator or starter or something else. I don't want to have to tow it to a shop and then they start hitting me with $1,200 worth of "repairs", but I also don't want to assume it's one thing (like I did the battery) and it still not work. Thanks.

Hi rmhpvg81,

If a new battry or jump start does not work, it definitely is not the alternator, at least for now.

It could be :
1. Starter
2. Security system.
3. Ignition switch.

Start by getting the starter circuit checked/tested. Unplug the starter relay in underhood fuse box.
Test for battery voltage at terminal #5. If voltage is available, use a fused jumper to connect with terminal # 3 and note if starter cranks.

Thanks for the reply. It is possible since there is a ticking noise coming from the underhood fuse box. I'll check it out.
