I let a buddy use my 4runner to tow a trailer 800 miles. After he came back he told me he heard a knocking sound coming from my engine. I started the truck and heard nothing. I was driving it the next day and everything was working fine. After about 20 mins, the weird sound came from the front. Then it started making a clunking sound while I was driving. I slowed down and it seemed to go away. I started to go again and the sound came back. I pulled over and made sure it didn't knock anymore. It stopped when I came out of gear. Only when I was in gear did it make the sound. I tried to shift from 4H to 2L but that did nothing, I went from drive to reverse and still nothing. I turned the engine off and tried to restart but the engine will not start. It turns over but will not start. I took it to the dealership and they said my starter was bad. I took the starter off (that is a whole issue in itself) and had it tested 3 different places. Everywhere I went they said it was good. I put the starter back in and still nothing. Any ideas where to look next. I did use to hear a really mild knocking sound from the engine upper area passenger side.

Hi cabowabo, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation

I put the starter back in and still nothing. Would it crank the engine over? Let me know

Test AM1 fuse 40amp, starter relay and the park and neutral position switch if all these checks out -replace the ignition switch

Yes I put the starter back in and still nothing. It cranks the motor over it just will not engage. The fly wheel doesn't even turn. I will check the fuse. If the ignition switch went bad would it let it still run, before I shut it off?

If the ignition switch ignition primary circuit is good it will continue to run but in your case when in the starting control circuit and if its open it will not crank the engine over.

The motor turns over, it will just not start. It sounds like it wants to but something is preventing it. Is there something in between where the starter engages to could prevent it from starting.

If its cranking over and will not start do below

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine atleast 3/16 away from ground-have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it
