Think it may be a bad ground

The car has been laid up in the garage for about a month with the battery removed. Yesterday I put the battery back in and when I turn on the ignition the lights flash and the horn sounds. A little more worrying is the fact that the battery starts to heat up ( you can actually hear it cook). Could this just be a bad ground or what am I missing?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Cold be a bad ground or a really bad drain on it. Check for both. Also check tosee if antitheft is engaged.

Thanks for the speedy reply guys. It begs the question, is there a way to turn off the anti-theft other than the key fob.
Thanks guys

Not really that may not be the problem though. Hopefully it is hooked up correctly as well.

The mystery is that the only thing that happened is that the battery was removed for about three weeks

Anytime you remove or disconnect a battery you have to reset the security system. So other things may be drawing on it as well.
