Removal & Installation (Grand Vitara, Vitara & XL-7)
Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel. Ensure parking brake lever is fully released. Loosen adjustment nut on parking brake cable. Remove brake drum by inserting two 8-mm bolts through holes in front of drum and alternately tightening bolts. Before installation, adjust brake shoes to allow brake drum installation clearance. On Grand Vitara and Vitara, outer diameter of brake shoes should be 8.638-.8.650" (219.4-219.7mm). On XL-7, outer diameter of brake shoes should be 9.972-.9.988" (253.3-253.7mm). On all models, to install reverse removal procedure. Adjust brake shoes and parking brake. See INSTALLATION under REAR BRAKE SHOES. See PARKING/EMERGENCY BRAKE under ADJUSTMENTS.
