Is it really necessary to drain the radiator prior to changing the thermostat? This thermostat is on the side of the engine and connected to the bottom radiator hose.
Can the hose and/or the thermostat hole be plugged with a rag or capped?

HI there, yes you can do this, but it is a good idea to replace the coolant if it has been there around 2 years, and you also want to be able to maintain the correct ratio, this will be more important if you live in a cold climate.
