My local dealer says we have a punctured axle cover and need to have it replaced. That involves removing the axle itself. The cost will be over $700, which we don't have. Is it a dangerous situation or can we let this go for awhile?

Hi:
The boot is designed to keep grease in and dirt out. If you leak the grease and take in dirt, it will cause premature wear to the joint. If the joint becomes bad, you will hear a clicking sound when turning the wheel.

If the joint is bad, it can be dangerous. I would recommend getting a second opinion for cost reason. The boot is about 50 dollars and around 2 hours labor. 700 sounds really high.
