I'm purchasing a 1998 Outback 2.5L with 115K miles. This car has a 5 speed manual. When I test drove the car, which is the first time I've ever drove a Subie, it sounded like a Volkswagen Bug (sort of); when revving up from 1st to 2nd gear & so on. When your at crusing speed it ran smooth; like at idle.

I also test drove the same year model with a automatic transmission and when accelerating it was much smoother. Is this normal for a subie that is a stick vs. automatic?

every car is diferent when driving, some have a little more power than others , driving a automatic compared to a stick the difference is like night and day.

Thanks for the info. Follow up question.

When in 5th gear and crusing around 65-70 mph the rpm seem high (comparing to my Toyota Tundra -automatice) and is around 3.25? around there.

Is this normal...seems like the engine is working pretty hard to maintain that speed!
