Engine Cooling problem

while driving down the freeway the other mornig i noticed the air coming from the heater (car was warmed up) then the temp guage spiked. i wasn't far so i made it to work. i noticed the coolant resvoir was completely full, and all other fluids were fine. on the way home the temp guage spiked but immediatley went back to nomal. does this sound like a themestat problem?
