I recently bought a used 2001 Subaru Forester and I've started to get a smell like burning rubber coming from the engine after I've driven it for a while, especially after driving up hill. I thought the engine might be over heating but the temp gauge stays in the middle. Any advice before I take it to the shop?

Sounds like oil troubles. First, check your oil level and also examine the oil on the dipstick and note any burnt smell or extreme dark colors. These are indications that it is way past due for an oil change. If it is low and no oil is on the stick at all, start looking for leaks. If no visible leaks found, it is being burnt internally. This usually results in smoke from exhaust.
