First, only crank an engine for a maximum of thirty seconds, as you found out these cable carry quite a bit of current. When you replace your burnt cables, you need to figure out what is missing. You need fuel, spark and compression to get an engine running, one or more is missing. Have an assistant crank while you check for fuel and spark. Check condition of both battery cables. Negative plays an important role. Leave negative disconnected until all your other burned out parts are fixed, attach it last.
