I took 5 speed out and put in an automatic transmission from a 1986 Firebird and it has a cable drive speedometer but s10 has an electric sensor. When it moves the check engine light comes on and I think it does something to the timing and just don't have any power like it did if I plug the sensor back in just so it will be there for it to read it would it work or what should I do.

You will need to remove the tail housing to install the reluctor wheel for your year, make, model, of truck. Check out the images (below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.
