I bought a Saturn Vue used. The check engine soon light has come on, and the nearest dealer is an hour and a half away. Can I take it to another mechanic to have him diagnose the problem, or is the diagnostic equipment proprietary and therefore only available at a dealership's repair center?

u can take it some where else the good thing about taking it to the dealer is thats all they do day in and day out so when they find a code in ur computer they probably have seen it before and know what it is.in most cases.i have seen people that have brought it to the dealer that went somewhere else first and had alot stuff changed and didnt fix it.i have also had trans shops bring saturns in after they rebuilt the trans and still has the same problem.thats just my expernices from working at the dealer but if u find a good aftermarket shop iam sure they can repair it.check ur gas cap and make sure its not loose that can set ur light off too have seen alot of loose caps on those.let me know how it goes.

So is the gas cap seal cracking? Also what is the exact code number you have in th computer? It will be a letter followed by a four digit code?
