My service engine soon light came on in February, in the past it has been the gas cap so I didn't take it in until last week for its oil change. They told me I need a new thermostat and gasket for $278. Couldn't afford it then so told me to come back in a couple weeks. The light was off this morning when I starting the car after dropping my friend off. Do I need to worry about the thermostat anymore? The gauge never has been any more than in the past. I would prefer to not spend the money if it isn't needed.

I don't know which code you have but if it's the one iam thinking of that would be a code p0128 that says that your thermostat is sticking open and your engine isn't getting up to the proper temp. If you have that code I would get it fixed you want your engine to get up to operating temp where it's designed to run the best. Next time your service engine soon light comes on go to a auto parts store like autozone and have your codes read and post the numbers for me and I can better answer your question.
