i looked it up on mitchel ondemand and it says there differnt part numbers ur 95 sl1 is 21120500 and ur 01sl1 is 21120612 part number so i would say no there not interchangable.

iam so sorry i totally miss read ur question.i was thinking in my head u were talking about a transmission swap.so the part numbers i told u were the transmission ones.but the engine swap still wont work with that 2001.the pistons,head,intake,injectors,and other things are differnt on that 2001.so u will have connector issues from what i saw.ur best bet is to call saturn and ask them what engines are interchangeable.let me know what u find and how it goes.again sorry about the mix up.
