Synthetic oil

I have a 2006 Saturn Vue with a 3.5 honda engine.
My question- do you have to use semi synthetic oil in a this engine? My dealer has said that you have to use synthetic oil or the check engine light will come on and stay on. My book doesn't say anything about using a synthetic oil just 5w20. Who do I believe the dealer or manufacturer? Is my dealer trying to rip me off?

Synthetic isn't a bad idea, but I don't see any relationship between the Check Engine light and the oil. Ask him to clearly explain how that can be.

It does not require synthetic.
