1997 Other Saturn Models 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 149k miles

I have a 97 saturn sl2, and as you probably already read it wont start...when i turn the key in the ignition everything in the car turns on it just wont crank up...i do recall a couple of times when i started my car it mad the sound that cars make when you try to start it but its already running you know the hard screeching noise! But Im just really scared at this point because my car is really old and its starting to have its problems...like when i shift into reverse it bangs into gear, so im not sure what to expect when i go to the dealership...my question is from what you read do you expect it to be the altenator, the starter or the transmission? At this point any (good) advice would be worth gold to me....thanx for any help given
