Transmission problem
1997 Renault Scenic Two Wheel Drive Automatic 76500 miles

hi I bought a renault megane 1.6e rt scenic auto it needed a new head gasket the car is in limp mode I do not no if it was allready in limp mode the guy who put the head gasket on we had bad words could the guy had done something to do with I have had it diagnos he told me to run it to the ground and do not spend any more money please help as it is a good car

Hey Mike

First thing you need to do is have the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic computer. Most good garages do this nowadays. Ask them to read the codes to see why it is limp mode ! It could be because the headgasket was bad ! Have them turn off the engine management light to get it out of limp mode. Test drive the vehicle. If it goes back into limp mode. Have them re-read the cars computer to see if it gives the same fault codes and verify where the acual fault is? If you do have to re-post please could you supply the codes. Let me know

Many thaks for your reply it has allready been on diagnosic machine. He said do not spend any more money on it and to run it to the ground. There is no engine managent light on. Thanks for your help any more info would help. This is driveing me mad once again thank you mike

You need to tell me how the car is behaving .. as much info as possible !! if the car is in limp mode and the MIL is not on .. then it could be the computer is bad ... the light should be on !! let me know

Sometimes when I try to start it it cuts out. Restart it again have to rev it to make it tick over. Sometimes drive down the road it cuts out. Sometimes when driveing down the road 30mph the car is pulling back thanks mike

Does he vehicle do more than 30MPH once you get it going ? did the guy actually change the headgasket ? sounds like it still has the gasket problem ? did the guy explain why he said "run it into the ground" ..? let me know

Yes. Do not no about the head gasket. We had a bit of trouble with the guy who done the head gasket. There was water in the oil when we bought it. A different garage the guy who did the test said it will cost you (1500.00) and run it to the ground thanks mike

If the car is doing more than 30MPH then it's not in limp mode ..and because the MIL is not on ..I'm guessing it's not a computer related fault .. I suspect the headgasket has not been done and this is still the problem ... a headgasket replacement on this vehicle would cost in the region of  300 ... have the cylinders compression tested at another garage .. most garages do not charge for a diagnosis in the hope they get the work !! .. let me know
