My car AC worked great until this summer. But I have only owned the car for 3 years. I would like to add some freon as I have been told that these older systems lose freon from older hoses and seals. My question is - can I add 134 or how do I tell what is in the system now? It still works but not as well as it used to.I have the adapter to put in 134 but I guess R12 is no longer available.

Your R-12 system needs to be converted over to R-134a not an expert in AC just a little to survive

You did not answer my question. How do I tell what is in the system now? Are the two refrigerants compatible. Can you mix them?

R-12 was phasing out in 1993. Dunno how long you had it recharge or what you have done from the past to get it retrofit to R-134a. It comes with the R-12 as far as know. No they're not compatible-To tell what's inside you need to take it to an AC shop or base it on the test port fittings there's a difference.
