My Targa was difficult to start and then backfired a numbrer of times. On removing the air filter cover I found a vertical machine screw appears to be stripped and the whole filter housing is loose. The housing appears to be cracked at a seam on the left hand side. Does the machine screw secure the whole housing or does the housing need to be replaced?

You will have to replace the intake housing but there is a aftermarket kit you install to keep this from happening again. Its a spring loaded flap that allows air to escape when the engine backfires due to a lean condition usually.
