1999 Pontiac Sunfire Temperature gauge

The car was making a whirring noise last night and when I drove to school this morning approximately 30 miles the temperature gauge was just above the 100 degree mark. Usually it rests in the middle of the gauge. I have coolant in the car but I do not know what is causing this drop.

What is your suggestion?
