I had a Buick LeSabre, about same vintage, with the same symptoms. It turned out to be a faulty camshaft sensor. If the sensor fails to read the rotation of the camshaft correctly, it shuts off the engine (it believes the cam is out of synch. with the crank, which could break some valves / pistons). A computer readout should give an error code -- but go to the Pontiac dealer. My local "repair shop" didn't get an error code, and I called the Buick shop -- the mechanic diagnosed it over the phone.
