Steering problem
2004 Pontiac Montana 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 133K miles

3 months ago I took the van in to repair a small pump shaft oil leak. Otherwise the system was totally silent from stop to stop. Today after changing 3 delco pumps 2 sets of hoses and 2 rack sets, the power steering pump is noise (whinning and growling) is getting worse. The system has been purged a number of times to vent air, but the noise is getting worse. Have you any suggestions I can take to the mechanics? We are all at wits end trying to quiet the system down.

Hi, my 99 montana has just started a humming noise when I turn right or left. It sounds like its coming from the steering shaft underneth the steering wheel. Sometime the "low traction" light comes on as well. Did you ever find out what hwppened to yours?

How long are you using the pumps before replacing them again? It can take longer than you would think sometimes to purge all of the air bubbles out of the system. Are they using P/S fluid versus A/T fluid?

Hi, when I first turn on the 99 montana, it starts fine, idles fine. I backout of the garage and start turning and I hear a noise (like the ABS brakes noise when applying them) and my low traction light go on until the noise stops. Today the van almost stalled when this happened. After driving it for a while it stopped. But everytime I start from somewhere that noise/low traction light come on and them goes off. Weird.I forgot to add.I think its the ABS sensor but im no mechanic

Cauduro- you will need to get the ABS/Traction control system scanned for codes, but yes it does sound like a wheel sensor. Have it scanned and get back to me with the codes

Can my ODB reader give a code? I thought it would only give check engine light codes?

Code readers usually only do the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) You need the EBCM read (Electronic Brake Control Module)
