Drive Train Axles Bearings problem
2000 Pontiac Montana Front Wheel Drive

This started a week ago and has gotten louder. A low whooing or whirring sound. Thought it was wheel bearings. Pulled the tires and inspected. Does not seem to be the bearings. Coasting down hill in neutral with engine off noise remains. (Dumb I know) Check engine light is on. Breaks appear fine under visual inspection. Any ideas?

Oh, new front tires and new lugs installed two weeks before noise started.

For process of elimination, answer these questions:

1. Can you hear the noise at idle, vehicle not running?
2. Where is the noise coming from? Front left, front right, rear left, rear right, etc.
3. Is the noise constant regardless of speed? Or does it increase in pitch and frequency the faster you travel?
4. How did you check the wheel bearing? And the brake pads?

I am almost positive that the check engine light is not related to your problem, but you may want to go to the nearest Autozone and have them scan the computer, and post the codes hear for proper diagnostic.
