Engine Cooling problem
1967 Pontiac GTO V8 Automatic lots miles

7 months ago I replaced the fan clutch and the engine was running at a pretty consistent 150 degrees. Then it sat for a few months and even had a trip to the body shop. Now the temp indications I am seeing are all over the place (but never zero). I'm not hearing any knocking like I would expect if it was a bad water pump. And the engine seems to be running smoothly. The strangest indication is sometimes when I throw it into neutral the temp will instantaneously drop from 250+ back to 150. The radiator level is dropping slightly as well so I am guessing it is getting hot.

Should I look at a temp gauge or is it possibly a wiring problem.

I'm not a car tech by profession but I do work on cars a lot and had a 67 gto. When you put it into gear does the engine torque raise or tilt the engine possibly pinching the wire for temp indicator thus grounding it out so it will read max temp and when you put car in nuetral it "relaxes" and ungrounds the pinched wire? Just a thought
