valve noise

2000 pontiac grand prix, 69000 miles, 3.1 engine. when i first start car i get excessive valve noise. it goes away after a few minutes, even after a new oil change. the engine runs smooth. what could be the problem? thanks

You have a lifter/s leakdown problem and when you change them-you have to change his partner the camshaft. They're brothers in the valvetrain.
