2002 Pontiac Grand Prix 59,000 miles. Car starts fine but when turning car off, key won't turn back all the way and I can't get the key out of ignition. Help!

That could be either the tumbler broken or the rack assembly in the column. No matter what its gonna have to come apart to find out what happened

I should say that at some point, the key does come out, but sometimes after 20-30 minutes of trying.
Is this something that an average locksmith could fix or is it a bigger problem? Any idea on how much $$ it could potentially cost to fix? Thanks :)

I have a similar problem in a 2000 Grand Prix. At times (not everytime) when I use the trans. Lock override near the shifter, I hear a clicking behind the dash just above the steering column. After I hear this, the key will turn back to the lock position.
Does anyone have any insight into the correlation of the clicking sound and the key turning back correctly?

Might be the shift lock out solenoid sticking or other problem with the lock out system

I corrected my similar problem by replacing the electrical switch which controls the lockout solenoid.

See my post for 2000 Grand Prix DRL and Heater control.
