Brake lights

I own a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT with the 3.1 engine and 69000 miles. About 2 months ago a buddy of mine told me that the brake lights weren't working, but the 3rd brake light was still working, along with turn signals and all other lights. I went thru checked all the bulbs and fuses and all were ok. Even replaced the brake light switch that is triggered by the brake pedal. Also noticed there was like another switch above that one. Didn't know if this other switch could be the problem or if it is a problem that others on here have been saying. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If it is a mechanical problem so many people are having, is there any chance in a recall or anything like that?

What I can tell you is the other switch is the cruise control switch, you adjust both at the same time, to adjust them, hold the pedal down to apply the brakes, push both switches forward, then pull up on the pedal all the way, your switches are now adjusted. If this doesn't solve the problem, look for loose connector, or bad ground in the trunk area.
