2006 Pontiac Grand Prix Check engine light and over heats

My check engine light comes on now and the car overheats.I had some anti freeze put in and it done the same thing a month later. What could be the problem.

First have the codes read at most autoparts stores.

Overheating could be thermostat, waterpump, or possible restriction in radiator/cooling system.

If heater is not putting out heat, then it is an indication of a thermostat, or waterpump.
