Engine Cooling problem
2004 Pontiac Grand Prix 6 cyl Automatic 154000 miles

Dear Sir,
I live in Kalamazoo MI where the winters are really cold and summers around 85. I own a Pontiac GP 2004 with 154000 miles on it.

Recently about 3 weeks ago I changed two of my brake calipers and all 4 rotors. At that time the mechanic suggested that I also do I tune up, so I went ahead and got it done.

Within two days of doing these repairs my air conditioner stopped working (heating & cooling).
I called in the mechanic and he said it could be a switch that had gone out, but as I had just spent so much money I couldn't afford it and put it off for later. The very next day things fixed itself and everything began to work like normal.

About a week later I left my car running while I was gone into a store for about 20 minutes as it was a cold night and my guest were still seated in the car. On returning and driving a few miles my AC shut off automatically and the display read "AC turning off due to engine over heating". At this time I noticed that the temperature reading on my dashboard had the pin pointing in the red zone. So I went on and stopped the car and let it cool for about 10 minutes and then drove off to my destination.

Ever since that incident I have noticed the temperature reading when I start off the car, starts right at the bottom, but within driving for about 10 minutes begins to rise slowly at regular intervals. It almost everyday gets up into the 3rd quarter of the reader within about 30 minutes of driving at about 30 - 35 mph. It also drops a little bit as my speed increases on the inter state. (Im guessing this is because of the cold air going in) This rise usually ocours at lower speeds. It has never after that night has gone into the red zone on the temperature reader and has never shut off my AC even though I run my AC full.

Could all this be dud to the tune up?

I also recently about 2 weeks ago, did a trip to Detroit (2hrs one-way non-stop) and back and the indicator rose up and stayed at the 3rd quarter.

Please help me fix this problem. Thanks. God Bless.

Hello -

To better assist you is your model a GT or GTP. Also please tell me your engine size in liter and the 8th digit of your VIN.

Also, please go to Auto Zone or O'Reilly's and for FREE they can pull the codes to the car. Most important: Once they check your codes, if they find something and you don't get it fixed and need to get back with us, please make sure you tell us exactly what the code was, number and all. Example, if the code was E0568 O2 Sensor bad. Then make sure you give us all of that. While there for FREE also they can bring their tester out and check your battery, alternator and starter.

Next, have you checked the coolant level in your car?

Next, with the hood open, engine cool, turn off the AC fan and all. Now start the car and see if the radiator cooling fans are moving....... Are they?

Next, turn the AC on and the blower fan on....... Now look at the radiator cooling fans..... Are they turning now?
