2002 Pontiac Grand Prix engine light came on

I have a 2002 pontiac grand prix GT. The engine light came on today. Just recently my engine oil was low and yet the mechanic saw no leaking. Nor have I in the driveway. Do you know what this could be. Why the engine light might be on. Is there something common with these cars that cause the engine light to come on?

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.
