2001 Pontiac Grand Prix My car is making a shimmy motion

2001 Pontiac Grand Prix 6 cyl Automatic 128000 miles

My car is making a tiwisting/shimmy motion when drving slowly, as I speed up the car does not shake as much, but when putting on brakes it shakes really bad. It feels as though it coming from the back of car. I replaced the tires Saturday 08/07/2010. What could it be? It is dangerous? How much will cost?

I assume when they changed tires, they aligned front end? If so they should have checked the toe/camber, and also checked for worn front end components, ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushings.

I would remove the front rotors, set on a flat surface and check them for warpage.
If OK, then check caliper slide pins for sticking.

Also check the CV boots for rips/tears and leaking lubricant.
