My 2000 Grand Prix has a problem i'm not familiar with. When the car is started by the key(instead of remote) it will not come out of park unless i over ride the security. i can do this by pusshing the over ride down. I tried a used shift lever mechanism, but it is exactly the same. my thoughts now are that it may be in the brake release. I need advice on changing the switch.

Thanks

First use a test light to verify it is the switch. The brake switch also works the shift lock. Test for power at the dark green/white wire on the brake switch with brake pedal pushed, if no power then it is the switch, if power you need to disassemble the console to gain access to the solenoid and test for power there
