engine surges at idle between stalling and 1500 rpm. Strong gasoline smell. I have been told it is a vacuum leak, a bad catalytic converter, map sensor.

Hi:
It sounds like a throttle position sensor. However, if you smell gas, there has to be a leak. That would be my first concern. Check the fuel lines from the tank to the fuel injection. Also, does the car have multiport injection? If so, check each injector to make sure there isn't an o-ring leaking. If there is, you have a fire hazard, and it could be the cause of your rough idle.

Let me know what you find.
