1992 Pontiac Grand Prix Trans Problems?

1992 Pontiac Grand Prix Front Wheel Drive 108, 00 miles

My car seems to slip into neutral at stops. I have to move the shifter to Neutral and then back into drive to get it to move. Sometimes if I press the gas it will jump back into drive. I took it to a shop to get the fluid/filter changed, but he suggested not changing it. Any suggestions. He only said not to change it because he was worried about metal shavings getting into the torque converter.
Thank you,
Jill

Have the shifter cable inspected. The shifter is connected to cable and to trans. The cable may be loose, a bracket broke, or a cable clip is broke.
It is also possible a motor mount has broken allowing excessive engine movement.

I would change the trans. Filter and fluid. If there are metal shavings in trans pan, it is only a matter of time before the trans goes.

Thank you for the info. I will check into it.
I have noticed that when I move the shifter, the orange line stays in the "D" unless go into "OD" or "1" or "2". Maybe this is the problem.
Thank you again!

Start car put in park. Have someone apply emergency brake, block wheels, and have them apply brakes.

Open hood, and from right or left side (NOT IN FRONT) have them shift from park to drive a couple of times, observe engine movement, if it is moving 2-3 inches, then it is a bad mount, which can affect the cable and shifter.
