Electrical problem
1992 Pontiac Grand Prix

I own a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix LE. Yesterday when I started the vehicle smoke began pouring out of the steering column and it looked like maybe something was melting? I was wondering if you could tell me what this sounds like and what the general cost to fix something like this is. Is it safe to drive if the smoking stops?

I'd take the battery cables loose. I wouldn't drive it till I found the problem/s. Drop the lower part of dash and or drop the steering column a little, try to get a good look at the wires going to the ignition switch. The circuits in the steering column might be an issue as well.
