I have a 2000 Grand Am and i am leaking coolant on the right side just in front of the big hose coming from the radiator. I have been told that this is a major repair job. I do not intend to keep the car that long that i will invest a lot of money. What can i do to stop the leak so it will run for a couple more months. When i fill it full of water or coolant, it runs great. After it heats up, the needle will quickly go to the right side to hot. A mechanic told me to pur some stop leak into the overflow tank and that would help. Is that right.

What leaks, the radiator, or the thermostat housing? Thermostat housing is cheap, radiator about 200.00.

If it's just the thermostat housing, remove the hosing, and make sure the themostat isnt stuck under it, there is a groove the t-stat sits in some are on the block, others are in the housing, when you tighten it, just snug + a little! It's easy to crack these!
Get a new t-stat while youre at it...Hope this answers your PM! And scrape ALL the old gasket and replace with a new one.
