Hi I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am with 155000 kms on it. I have just recently had a problem with the car shutting off in stop and go traffic. It idles below 600 rpm's and then the car shuts off. It restarts fine but keeps idling low and then shutting off. I took it into a certified GM Mechanic and there is nothing wrong they said. They had it on the computer, checked all gages and wiring also checked the fuel pressure. Everything seems to be normal. But the car shuts down and this is dangerous. I recently had the ignition switch replaced approximately 3 weeks ago for a faulty aftermarket alarm and starter. Not sure if this has something to do with it.

This sounds like the Idle control system is malfuctioning. If the system is fine electronicly you may need an upper intake cleaning. This is something you can do youself. Get a couple of cans of intake cleaner. Take as much of the intake apart as you can from the air filter to the throttle plate. Clean everything including the trottle plate. Now restart the engine with the intake off. This will set a code and the engine may run rough, but it wount hurt anything. Idle the engine up by turning the throttle plate a little bit and spray a small amount of intake cleaner into intake. The engine will idle down a bit and rumble, but again your not hurting anything. continue to do this until the cloud that comes out of your tailpipe is gray instead of black as it will be when you start if the engine is dirty. Put everything back together and have a parts store clear your codes. They do it free in the states.
