ive never heard of the air filter stalling a car. if its really bad id change it, but it seems like it would do it all the time or not let the car start at all. its hard to say what it is, if your check engin light is on, take it to auto zone or a parts store. i know auto zone will tell you why the lights on for free. i do know grand am's are known for having alot of motor problems. you could check your fuel pressure make sure your pumps not going out, change your fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs and wires, air filter. thats the cheapest things id try first. thats my 2 cents. hope it helps
