1996 Pontiac Grand Am Car will not leave park

Transmission problem
1996 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cyl Automatic 230000 miles

my friends grand am is sitting in my driveway. She went to leave and it wouldn't leave park. The ERLS fuse is fine, as are the brakes, other fuses and break lights. What else should we check and could you include a diagram?

For temporary fix turn key forward one click then move shifter to neutral then start car and put in drive. Sounds like the shift interlock solenoid at the shifter may be no good

Thats actually the first thing we tried. No dice. Any other ideas?
