Hello,

I have a Pontiac Grand AM that has problems with shaking when the car accelerates to 40 miles per hour. The steering wheel shakes and the whole front end of the car shakes. The car did not have this problem previously, and it is a recent development since a relative told me the front end of the car slid into a gate. Would you have any suggestions on what could be the cause of why the car is shaking when it accelerates? Thank you for your help.

The primary cause may have taken place if the drive axle from the transaxle was struck from the accident. Generally the inside C.V. Joint of the axle, (nearest to the transaxle), wears out causing the same symptom you described. If the ONLY time the vehicle vibrates is under acceleration, and immediately stops when the gas pedal is released, then the axle will need to be replaced to correct the condition.

A quick undercar inspection of both axles should reveal the damage, but the side of the car that vibrates the most should also steer you in the right direction.
