1994 Pontiac Grand Am

My '94 Pontiac Grand Am just bit the dust on the freeway - the battery was still operational, but it just kind of shook a little and lost power. Prior to this happening, there had been a gurgling/growling noise when the brakes were applied, and a loud whining noise from under the hood after prolonged operation - running hot, but no smoke or anything and all the fluids checked out ok. I've recently had the head gasket and thermostat replaced. What could have caused it to quit?
