I have a 1993 2.3L quad 4 engine that the engine started to chug/jerk enough that the whole exhaust under the car shakes. This started out of the blue. The car ran fine early in the day and then when started it was chugging. After this started the car makes a clicking noise during acceleration. The car starts just fine. The chugging is smoothed during acceleration but then the clicking noise starts. The clicking isn't hear when backing up.
I have replaced the spark plugs, boots, coil pack and housing. This did not change the chug/jerk or clicking noise. I haven't seen any visible leaking under the car. The oil doesn't have a milky ring on the cover. I did notice a drip of water where the tail pipe connects to the muffler when the car is started. There is also a strong fuel exhaust smell when the car is started and running.

THe water from the exhaust is normal. Was the check engine light on? Also, have you checked to make sure the catylatic converter isn't plugged? Finally, it sounds like it could have to do with a temp sensor, but I can't be sure without a code from the computer.

Let me know.
