To start the car the gas has to be held down, when started the engin sounds as if it misses and occasionally backfires, and when put into gear it immediately seizes up and dies. It has new plugs and boots, all hoses are good, and seems as if the compression is good.

Hello,

Ok, your vehicle has 148k+ on it have you had the timing belt changed? With what you describe with the backfiring it sound like a timing problem. Have the belt checked it may have jumped timing do to being loose. Actually if you haven't had the timing belt changed then I would change it.
