Rough ride and smoke

1996 Pontiac Firebird 6cyl. 130kmi 104k on engine.
a few weeks ago while stopped at a light my car began to shake, the light turned so I gave it some gas and the car became more rough and hesitant a few seconds later it stopped and surged foward. 5 or 6 days later I started it up at home and it was having the same problem, after a couple minutes it stopped. Then a week later it started again with a slight burning smell as I was coming home, I parked shut it off added some oil started it back up but there was no change and I could see some smoke coming from the passenger side of the enginge. My only thought was that maybe I blew a head gasket? Thank you for any advice/suggestions - John
