Engine Performance problem
1986 Pontiac Firebird 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

DROVE car for about 2 1/2 blocks to get home, but didn't realize that my belts came off near my brothers home (2 1/2 blocks away). The engine didn't heat up, but after turning it off, the car hasn't been the same. It won't start. The V belt is NEW and I found the alternator belt in good condition. We re-installed the belts. When I turned the key, there's just a clicking noise. The engine doesn't fire. I'm trying to learn how to fix my vehicle (17 yr. old & first vehicle). Purchased a new battery & car doesn't turn over. Can you give me any ideas on what to troubleshoot for. I was told to have the alternator tested & check the spark plugs, wires & distributor cap too. Please give me some ideas. Thanks!

Hi firebird86, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation

Lets start by having the battery and alternator load tested if both okay and its cranking over and will not start-do below

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine atleast 3/16 away from ground-have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it
