transmission

i have a 1996 plymouth grand voyager 3.3 liter with 163,000 miles and when i start to go and it makes the first shift it does the shift hard and will not shift no more but if i turn the van off and turn it back on it will work fine until it desides to do it agian.what could this be?

Jack's right, these trannys had a load of different probs. Without the codes, it's a much wilder guess.

Sounds like when you shut it off, the problem is either "resetting" in the computer's mind or a valve/selonoid is releasing on shut down.

sometimes the tramsmission needs to be reset, if for example the battery has been replaced, the computer will not register the tranny properly therefore you get an improper shift. take it to the nearest dealership and ask to have it reset. it is fairly inexpensive when you consider the price of a new tranny.

Okay, I guess I need to clarify. There is a problem that appears to be putting the transmisison into a limp mode. It will work but not as it should because there is a problem. The problem is detected by the computer after it runs a self test. Shutting the key off wipes out the temporary memory about the transmission problem until it agian detects it.

I have never heard of a transmission needing to be reset. But I'm sure there are a lot of things I haven't heard of.
