1986 Plymouth Reliant cooling problem

1986 Plymouth Reliant 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 200k miles

when the car has warmed up, the temp indicator is in the normal range. Every so often, the temp indicator goes 2/3 of the way up to max, stays a while then comes back to normal. What would cause this type of problem since it just started doing this? Thank you for your kind attention to this matter. Gameguy

Check the coolant level, if it's low you may have an air pocket. If it's ok you may need a new sending unit.

Thermostat? Yep also a posibilty.
